The Difference between Judging and Analyzing

Conflict in the Workplace COVID Survey

As I wrote in this month’s article,’When we judge others, we criticize their moral behavior as inappropriate’ (read the full article Accept Others and Be Rich); criticizing people is detrimental to our own being, however, there has to be a balance somewhere to allow for analyzing.

What is the difference between judgement and analyzing?

Here are a couple of distinctions that I have found useful:  (Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/russell-bishop/self-help-are-you-critici_b_627267.html

  • Judgment vs. evaluation: if you look at a couple of different light sources, say a candle and a 100 watt light bulb, or the sun and the light bulb, you may be able to notice the relative difference in the amount of light being emitted. An evaluation would simply state that one is brighter than the other. A judgment would condemn one as too bright, or the other as not bright enough.
  • Critical thinking vs. criticizing: both require the ability to notice and to observe. However, critical thinking is more akin to evaluation while criticizing is more akin to judgment in that those who criticize often add an element of negativity to the observation.

Basically, to analyze you are seeing things as they are, and not necessarily forming a negative opinion.  You can observe and accept, even though what you see is different to your own ideas or opinions.  I think a lot of people get hung up on judging others, waste time and block thier best energy in the process.  Love people as they are … learn why
